Kea Property Group: A company growing on Auckland's North Shore.

Vision and foresight are the qualities that have made market leaders of the Kea Property Group. A privately owned company by registered quantity surveyor and building economist David McAlpine, Kea Properties has been a leading developer in the mushrooming North Harbour Technology Park in the Albany industrial basin.

Kea Properties has been responsible for a host of information technology companies in the basin including Tech Pacific, PC Direct and electronics distributors Hagemeyer (NZ). The company completed an auto service centre in 1999 with clients including Beaurepaires, Midas, Vehicle Testing New Zealand and Gough, Gough & Hamer.

Other developments have also been completed for international and national groups including Brightpoint, ITW NZ, Brake and Transmission, New Zealand Post, Actionmail, Schering Pharmaceutical, Transworld Publishing, American Bank Note, Barkers Mens Clothing, Rip Curl NZ and Mazer Technologies.

Kea Properties was one of the first developers in the Albany basin - acquiring land when the basin comprised a 30-acre industrial subdivision with the balance in farmland and orchards.

Today North Harbour Technology Park is a fully serviced commercial park of approximately 420 acres and is one of the countries most sought after corporate addresses.

Says Kea managing director David McAlpine: 'The Housing Corporation was the lead land developer in the mid 1980s eventually selling to property developers including our company. We developed our first site in 1985 and since then have completed over 1.3 million square feet.

The North Harbour estate came of age in the early 90s on completion of arterial roading systems linking North Harbour to Auckland City via the Northern Motorway.

Now most of the major computer distribution companies are in the basin as are the electronic distribution companies. There are also a good deal of publishers along with many multinationals who have invested in the region.'

Kea Properties offices in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore were transformed by the company two years ago into a substantial retail block. The block specialises in childcare stores including Pumpkin Patch, Edex Toys and Number Works.

Says David: 'Over the years, Kea has forged close ties with the North Shore community through sponsorship of the arts, sports and community projects. We now look forward to the challenge of the new millennium.'
